Derby County added to their goalkeeping department in summer 2023 with the signing of Josh Vickers from Championship side Rotherham United.
The shot-stopper joined the Rams on a three-year deal following the expiration of his contract with the Millers to link back up with Head Coach Paul Warne, First Team Goalkeeper Coach Andy Warrington and the rest of the backroom staff.
Starting his career with Premier League giants Arsenal, Vickers was awarded his first professional contract with the Gunners in 2013.
That same year he got his first taste of men’s football as he was sent on loan to Canvey Island of the Isthmian League as an 18-year-old and made 30 league starts.
He climbed the divisions following his first loan spell to join Concord Rangers of the National League South, initially on a month’s loan but had that extended for the entire season soon afterwards.
In August 2015 he left Arsenal and joined Swansea City on a permanent deal. After spending his first season with the Under-21s, the following year saw him make his EFL debut on loan with Sky Bet League Two side, Barnet.
He was released in 2017 and was picked up by Lincoln City where he really began to make a name for himself, working alongside Warrington.
Vickers helped the Imps claim the Sky Bet League Two title in 2018/19 and further established himself in the side the following season as he played 37 times Sky Bet League One.
In December 2019, Warrington left Lincoln to join Warne's coaching staff at Rotherham United and less than a year later Vickers was making that same move.
For the next three seasons, that’s where he has remained, fighting for his place as number one alongside Viktor Johansson. During his time with Rotherham he was a promotion-winner from League One in 2021/22, as well as being part of their success in the Papa Johns Trophy. He also featured on a handful of occasions in the Championship during the 2022/23 season before electing to join Derby.
Vickers made 12 appearances across all competitions for the Rams during his debut season in Derbyshire and kept three clean-sheets.
