A spirited performance saw Derby County secure
a vital Sky Bet Championship point in a 0-0 draw against high-flying Burnley at Pride Park Stadium on Tuesday
night.
The Clarets held the ball for the majority of a gritty first half, but some excellent goalkeeping from Jacob Widell Zetterström denied a dangerous-looking Zian Flemming.
An onslaught of attacks from Derby towards the end of the half forced equally valiant defending from the visitors to see the game even and goalless at the break, despite chances nearly landing Jerry Yates and Craig Forsyth.
The second half yielded few chances for both sides, although defender Matt Clarke headed wide for Derby late on as they pushed for a winner.
Key Moments
It was an even opening ten minutes at Pride Park with the closest chance being a header from Forsyth at the back post that bounced wide of the goal.
Derby applied some pressure on the Burnley defence 15 minutes in with a string of balls into the box, but Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford plucked Marcus Harness’ cross out of the air to settle the visitors’ back line.
Zian Flemming’s effort came close after he brought a ball over the top down beautifully in the 17th minute, and he hit a strong strike moments later - but Jacob Widell Zetterström dived to his left brilliantly to deny the midfielder.
Marcus Edwards carried the ball from midfield into the Derby box but scuffed his effort wide due to Forsyth’s pressure in the 23rd minute.
Flemming found himself with another goal-scoring opportunity as the clock hit 26 minutes after a miscommunication between the Rams' defence, but his effort bounced wide of the goal.
Forsyth battled for the ball in the middle of the park before looping a ball over the top for Yates, but Trafford was fast off his line to collect the ball.
A well-crafted effort saw Derby come near in the 40th minute as Eustace’s men stepped up the intensity.
Sondre Langås’ lofted ball over the top found Yates, who played the ball back to Adams. The Gambian international faked a shot and let the ball roll through to Forsyth. The left wing-back played a deep cross to Harness at the back post, who headed back to Yates, but the striker's shot whistled wide of the left post.
Derby applied relentless pressure in the final five minutes of the first half, with chances coming from Kane Wilson, Liam Thompson and Yates, but Scott Parker’s side threw their bodies on the line to deny all of the Rams’ chances.
Eustace’s men started the second half brightly, forcing a handful of corners, though they were unable to capitalise from the set pieces.
Burnley’s Josh Cullen whipped a cross in from the left in the 58th minute, which narrowly missed the head of Josh Laurent at the back post.
Flemming found himself with time to turn on the edge of the box and hit a left-footed shot, though his effort went wayward with 66 minutes played.
Derby’s first his first change of the night came in the 69th minute as Nathaniel Mendez-Laing replaced Harness.
The Rams were applying pressure once again on 70 minutes with Burnley clearing Wilson’s cross only as far as Thompson. He crossed towards the back post, but the ball was met by a Claret head.
Derby’s second change came as the clock hit 78, as Langås made way for Kayden Jackson after a spell needing treatment.
Clarke went agonisingly close as he couldn’t steer his header on target in the final minute of regulation time.
Despite a nail-biting finish, with both teams threatening, the game ended with the points shared.
