Derby County’s Under-18s returned to action following their Christmas and New Year break with a 3-0 loss against Sunderland at Moor Farm Training Ground.
In their first league outing since the end of November, when Danny Maye’s side claimed a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest, they tasted defeat in the freezing Derbyshire conditions.
The Rams’ starting line-up displayed eight changes from the 4-1 win over the same opponents in the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup last month, owing to a number of players featuring for the Under-21s in their 2-1 home win over Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League 2 on Friday night.
Joe Neild put Sunderland ahead inside the opening 20 minutes before Marcus Neil doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Finn Geragusian rounded off the scoring for the Black Cats midway through the second half to seal the victory.
The Under-18s are back in FA Youth Cup action in their next outing when they travel to Sheffield United on Thursday 16th January (7pm kick-off), while their next league outing will see them head to Liverpool on Saturday 25th January (12pm kick-off).
