Derby County will go head-to-head with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on New Year’s Day for their first fixture of 2025 in the Sky Bet Championship (3pm kick-off).

A late winner from Wednesday saw the South Yorkshire outfit come out on top in a 2-1 victory when the teams last met in a competitive match-up at Pride Park Stadium at the start of December.

The Rams will be looking to return to winning ways when they head north after falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat against league leaders Leeds United at Pride Park in their last outing of 2024 on Sunday.

Danny Röhl’s side will also enter the fixture off the back of a defeat as they were on the wrong end of a 3-1 reverse against Preston North End on Sunday. The Owls sit in 11th place after 24 games - with nine wins and six draws to their name.

Team News

Midfielder Liam Thompson has been out of action for the recent festive fixtures after picking up a minor hamstring issue in mid-December but could make a return against the Owls. Fellow midfielder Ben Osborn is also being monitored after missing the last two matches with a muscle issue.

Centre-back Eiran Cashin remains on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury in the Rams' 4-0 win over Portsmouth at Pride Park Stadium.

Right-back Ryan Nyambe is continuing to progress in his recovery from a knee injury suffered in September, while midfielder David Ozoh remains out with a quad problem.
