Head Coach Paul Warne says his Derby County squad put in a performance to be proud of after picking up their first league win away from home in the 2024/25 Sky Bet Championship on Wednesday night.
Derby claimed a 2-1 win against Coventry City on the road to take their first three points of the campaign away from home.
Jerry Yates netted twice for the Rams to propel them to a win at the Coventry Building Society Arena, while Liam Thompson and Dajaune Brown also impressed as they made their first starts of the current Championship campaign.
Warne caught up with RamsTV following his side’s victory over the Sky Blues.
On getting three points against Coventry…
It's great to get an away win. I thought we gave a really good performance. We may have ridden our luck at times, but I thought generally our effort level was great. We created really good chances. I'm really proud of the lads.
We obviously changed shape coming into the match and we didn't have too much time to work on it. Fair play to my coaches for that as well and everyone behind the scenes, while some fresh legs helped too. I thought Liam Thompson was excellent in midfield and Dajaune Brown was really good on his full debut in the league. I thought Kenzo Goudmijn was the best he's been in a while - that little rest in the last game has done him good. I was also able to bring on players like Kane Wilson, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, James Collins and Sonny Bradley. It just felt like a real collective effort.
On the fans driving the team on…
I'd like to thank everyone who turned up tonight. I went and clapped them before the game and there wasn't a spare seat. I asked them to be loud for the lads and you could really feel them in the stadium. The lads literally gassed out for the crowd. If we would have conceded in the last second or whatever, I'd have still been really proud of how hard everyone worked tonight, the fans included.
On taking advantage when chances came…
When the moments came, we took them. A couple of times in the second half, we looked really good. Like I said, I thought Tommo was the best player on the pitch. That said, all the lads delivered. I thought we started the game quite well, but we kept slashing at things a little bit, which was a tad frustrating. We defended really well and there's obviously tired bodies in there.
On getting the first away win…
If we win every home game and don't win an away game, it doesn’t matter to me - it’s just about collecting points when you get an opportunity to. We did that tonight and the away following played a massive part in that.
We don't really listen to outside noise, really. I just talk to my players and my staff, that's it. I'm not concerned, but I do understand the fact you want to see your team win away and you want to see you win at home. The fact that there wasn't a spare seat and for the fans to come to watch the team again in sold out numbers, when our away form hasn't been as good as our home form, is a huge credit to our supporters.
