Head Coach Paul Warne praised Derby County's hard-earned point against Millwall on Saturday and the importance of his side getting off the mark away from home ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Oxford United in the Sky Bet Championship (7:45pm kick-off).
Derby picked up their first point on the road against the Lions to complement their near-peerless record on home turf, with four wins from five games at Pride Park Stadium in the Championship.
Jerry Yates netted for the first time in a Derby shirt in the Rams’ 1-1 draw in South Bermondsey and was picked out for praise by the Derby boss, with his work rate warranting a long-awaited goal after signing on loan from Swansea City in July.
Warne spoke to RamsTV before training on Monday to discuss the midweek trip to Oxford.
On getting off the mark on the road with a point against Millwall…
I'm pleased every time we pick up something. We went there to try and win and, in fairness to Millwall, they made it difficult for us and caused us problems. Jacob made some good saves when he was needed. No-one in football wants to not win matches but if you're not going to win, the next best thing is to get a point and especially away from home. It is another point in the bank and now we move on to the next game.
On Jerry Yates’ first goal for the club at Millwall…
He's really popular. His work ethic is great and everybody who plays trains hard at this football team, I appreciate that. As a centre-forward, you're always judged on goals. His desire and drive at the front of the pitch is amazing, especially when you're up front on your own, you run from centre-half to centre-half to the goalkeeper to the centre-half and back to the goalkeeper. We're encouraging him to keep going. It takes a lot of mental fortitude as well as the physical side. The lads get on with him so well, it's like he's been here forever - he has fitted in really easily.
On the Rams’ last visit to Oxford United in December 2023 as they ran out 3-2 winners…
Every away win is enjoyable. I know we had loads last year, but Oxford was right up there because you could just feel that we were going to get back into it that night. I remember the game really clearly because even though we were 2-0 down, I thought we were playing well. Sometimes scorelines can be kind to you and sometimes they can be harsh. I didn't think we deserved to be losing 2-0, although we'd made two howling mistakes. To go on and win it was great. They are the nights that, as a fan, make it enjoyable and worthwhile to be part of. Hopefully, there'll be evenings and away games like that this season.
