Kane Wilson says he is looking to emulate his team-mate Ryan Nyambe as Derby County eye a fifth win at Pride Park Stadium in the Sky Bet Championship this season when they play Hull City on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
The 24-year-old came off the bench as Derby drew 1-1 with Millwall last Saturday to register his seventh appearance of the season and started as the Rams earned another point in a 1-1 draw at Oxford United on Tuesday night.
Wilson heaped praise on his fellow right-back Ryan Nyambe's defensive abilities after the Namibian international suffered a knee injury, which will keep him out of action until 2025, against Millwall last Saturday that saw Wilson introduced to the field of play.
Wilson spoke to RamsTV ahead of Saturday's clash with the Tigers at Pride Park Stadium.
On earning two points from back-to-back away games…
It's good to get points on the board. We knew Millwall was a tough place to go; it can be quite hostile and hard to get points there. After the Oxford game, we were disappointed with the first half; everyone knows that we could have played better. We improved in the second half and showed courage to come out and get the goal. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's finish was really good. In hindsight, we'll take two draws from two tough places to go.
On Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Jerry Yates scoring their first goals of the season…
Everyone knows how good Nat is, so to get his first goal of the season was important for him, even though he's been contributing with assists. Before the Millwall game, the gaffer showed us a video of just how good we've been so far this season as a confidence boost. Obviously all the goals were on the video and Jerry and Nat were sat there joking and saying: ‘you haven't shown our goals!' We were bantering about it because after that, they've both scored!
On being ready to step into the team after Ryan Nyambe's injury…
It's horrible really, because me and Ryan are so close. That's football, though. Everyone knows that if someone gets injured, you're going to get an opportunity. There's no nice way of spinning a four to six month injury and we're devastated for Ryan. He's amazing. Defensively, he's scary. I've got to now try and do my best to impersonate him and be as aggressive in the tackle! My heart goes to him and I hope it's a speedy one and we'll be there with him.
On the fans at Pride Park this season…
We use the fans to help us. I think it's a massive part for us. We have worked to try and make it a fortress. When you have that many people screaming for you, you can run that little extra yard. It just gives you the motivation to do well for the team and the fans and to put points on the board.
