Kane Wilson admitted Derby County’s players were understandably left disappointed to taste defeat following their 2-0 reverse at Sunderland in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday night.
Goals either side of half-time from Jobe Bellingham and Wilson Isidor saw Sunderland pick up all three points to move to the top of the Sky Bet Championship standings.
Wing-back Wilson made his first start since mid-August at the Stadium of Light, after recovering from a hamstring issue sustained in the 1-0 home win over Middlesbrough in the second outing of the league campaign, and got the full 90 minutes under his belt.
Wilson spoke to RamsTV after the final whistle to give his verdict on the Rams’ first midweek Championship fixture of the 2024/25 season.
On the result…
We are disappointed. At times we looked like we could get something from the game and we tried to be as competitive as we could be. Stringing a few passes together was probably our downfall. We knew if we started quickly that we could, possibly, quieten the crowd a bit. We had a few chances and if they had gone in, who knows. Then again, they had some chances too before they scored the first goal. We changed the press a bit in the second half and tried to get around them a bit more. It was tough because they’re a good team. Defeats happen and we go again; we want to put it right on Saturday.The fans were great tonight too, high up in the stands and singing throughout. Credit to all of them and I hope they know that although we lost, we fought and gave everything for them because we all love it here.
On being competitive in the Championship…
We believe we are competitive in this league; we lost to a screamer and a well-worked goal. It is tough, but we knew that it would be. We can take positives, of course, but this is a results business and we are gutted to have lost 2-0.
On returning from injury…
It felt good to be out there. Everyone knows that the worst part about being a footballer is being injured. It was a hamstring injury where I was out for three or four weeks, but I am back now and eager to help the team get some wins.
On getting back to Pride Park on Saturday against Queens Park Rangers…
We are looking forward to it and want to get a good result to take into the international break. When we beat Bristol City 3-0 before the last break, we felt on top of the world for a good week or so. We know how important this match is and with the crowd pushing us on at Pride Park we will give everything we can.
