Ebou Adams says the Derby County squad have shown that they can be competitive against teams in the Sky Bet Championship despite defeat on the road against Watford.

Goalscorer Adams gave the Rams the lead within 240 seconds of the first half at Vicarage Road, but the hosts turned the game around as an impressive acrobatic goal by Vakoun Bayo got the Hornets level before Moussa Sissoko struck from inside a packed penalty box in the second half to seal a 2-1 win.

Adams caught up with RamsTV after the defeat and spoke about the frustration of coming away from nothing against the Hornets, needing to hold firm defensively and the boost of the travelling Derby fans.

On the fine margins in the result…

We had a chance to get more from the game and it's annoying because I thought we gave a good account of ourselves. It was disappointing when we conceded the second goal - sometimes you can't really stop the first goal and theirs was a good goal to be fair - but the second goal, for me, was a bit random and it was a little bit deflating.

We showed some very good play at times and it shows that we can compete in this league. We should keep believing in ourselves and we'll be alright.

On the side’s positive defending…

That's the frustrating part. Sometimes there's only so much you can do. We defended well, but sometimes they can get the lucky ricochet and score. That's what happened.

At times we played good football and just that final pass or put it to the left or the right of the goalkeeper. I'm looking at myself. The header I had to make it 2-1 to us, I'm a little bit annoyed with. That's the difference. If I take my chance there, then it's a different story. Watford took their chances and we should have taken ours.

On Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Barrow…

It's absolutely important (to move on from the defeat). We’ll look at it (today’s performance) and after that, we just move on and focus on Tuesday and hopefully try and get a win there to get to the next round. That can give us a bit of confidence for the game against Bristol City next Saturday before the international break.
