Liam Thompson admitted he had been wanting to add more goals to his game after he scored the equalising goal as Derby County secured qualification into Round Two of the Carabao Cup against Sky Bet League Two Chesterfield on Tuesday night.
The Rams came out on top against Paul Cook’s Spireites, with a 2-1 win, at Pride Park Stadium.
Thompson equalised for Derby in the 37th minute with a sweet strike from distance that nestled into the top right corner of the net before Kayden Jackson secured the win for Derby in the second half after coming off the bench.
The Academy graduate caught up with RamsTV after the game to discuss getting the side's first win of the season on the board.
On qualifying for the Second Round of the Carabao Cup…
It’s always pleasing to get through. It is another game of football coming up, so we can't complain. A win is a win and we'll take it all day.
On his equalising goal…
It's always nice to contribute with a goal, especially one like that. It was a nice to see it go in. It's something I need to add more to my game and I'm looking to do that and, thankfully, I could help the team tonight. It was a great set-up by Dajaune Brown - it sat up lovely and I didn't think twice about hitting it.
On Dajaune Brown’s performance…
I think he did brilliantly. He's a great lad, a humble lad and he's come through the Academy like me, so we've got that in common. He's a very good player. He works hard and I thought he worked really hard off the ball tonight. He made some good runs, battled hard and he got into some good positions. He didn't get his goal, which I think he deserved. That will come with his hard work and I think he's been really good for us.
On needing the win ahead of Saturday's match against Middlesbrough…
It's something we needed going into Saturday against Middlesbrough. I thought we had good parts in the game tonight, but there were also some areas that we can improve on. It's the second game of the season, so I think getting a win at home puts us in a good place.
