Derby County Women have added another player to their squad in the early stages of the 2023/24 season.
Manager Sam Griffiths, who saw her side open up their league campaign with a narrow 2-1 home defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, has moved to bolster the ranks with the addition of former Manchester United midfielder Rebecca May.
May, who is 21, joins the Ewes after recently leaving the Women’s Super League outfit at the end of her contract.
She has come right through the ranks at United, having initially joined the club at Under-10s level, and made her senior debut in February 2020 off the bench in a 1-1 draw against Reading. In recent years she has continued her development with United’s Under-21 side.
May has been capped by England at Under-17 level and also gained a call-up to the Under-19s squad in 2020 but didn’t get match minutes during the La Manga tournament.
May said: “I’m really happy to be here. The training ground is a really nice place and seems like a good set-up.
“Sam Griffiths has good intentions and ambitions for the club so that is why I am happy to sign.
“I was at Manchester United from the age of eight, so I had a good time there and I’m excited to start at Derby County.”
May is the Ewes’ sixth signing of the summer following July’s signings of Charlotte Steggles, Yasmin Mosby, Eleanor Ashton, Anna Draper and Maria Timms and she could make her debut in Sunday’s League Cup meeting with West Bromwich Albion at the Don Amott Arena in Mickleover (2pm kick-off).
