Derby County midfielder Liam Thompson was 'buzzing' to get his name on the scoresheet for the first time in his career in the 5-0 win over Torquay United in an Emirates FA Cup First Round Replay on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old scored his first professional goal and helped the Rams progress into Round Two of the FA Cup and secure a trip to League Two side Newport County later this month.

The Academy graduate spoke to RamsTV after the game to give his thoughts on the 90 minutes and his first ever goal.

On the game and the goal…

I am buzzing with the goal. It has taken me 39 games to get a goal but I’m buzzing with it. I couldn’t quite believe it had gone in to be honest but more importantly it was all about getting through to the next round. The second-half was tough at times but we pulled through and got the job done and that’s all that matters.

On the performance…

These games are tough, it’s more of a mentality thing. We had it the other way around last week when we went to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

For some reason your game rises and goes up to their level almost and fair play to Torquay they made it horrible like they did at their place by putting balls into the box and causing us problems.

I think the lads' mentality today was brilliant, we started a bit slow but the lads were top class overall.

On the first game playing on the mind…

The gaffer said at half-time we had to be ruthless and put them to bed. He said the next goal was vital and we went 4-0 up.

In the first-half we should have been more goals ahead in fairness but like the boss said, we had to be ruthless and take the chances when they come to put the game out of sight.

On breaking into the side…

You can’t spit your dummy out, you’ve got to keep going and keep working hard. The lads we’ve brought in this year are top players.

The league is tough, tougher than I thought it was going to be, but as long as I’m doing my part and coming on that’s all I can do.
