Defender Jake Rooney says he couldn’t ‘ask for anything more’ following Derby County’s impressive Carabao Cup victory over Championship side West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night.
The Rams were 1-0 winners at Pride Park Stadium thanks to Louie Sibley’s fine first-half strike, which opened the Academy graduate’s account for the season.
Derby had a host of other opportunities to extend their advantage with Lewis Dobbin, full debutant David McGoldrick, Jason Knight and goalscorer Sibley all going close.
But the Baggies weren’t without threat themselves and a stellar defensive performance, as well as some fine saves from goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith, kept the visitors outfit at bay.
And after sealing safe passage through to Round Three for the first time since the 2018/19 campaign, the impressive Rooney spoke to RamsTV to give his take on the evening.
On The Performance…
It was absolutely brilliant; the lads were excellent all game. I felt it was a good performance from myself, a clean sheet and we’re going into the next round. I can’t ask for anything more. We were composed towards the end and kept our cool to keep them out, which is all that matters. It’d be a dream to play at Goodison Park against Everton in the next round, so we’ll see who we get.
On Craig Forsyth’s Influence…
He’s brilliant, he’s a good leader and is very experienced. He was talking me through the whole game and it was good to have him alongside me.
On Settling In…
It’s been a great challenge for me. With the competition against us in tonight’s game you can see the quality and that’s only going to improve me. Having the opportunity to play first-team football is what I was after when I came here. I’m loving every single minute. It’s like a new lease of life and I couldn’t ask for more.
On His Adaptability…
I’ve played centre back and central midfield and I don’t mind either of those. I can handle myself on the ball and I can do a job at the back as well if asked.
