Derby County’s longest serving player Craig Forsyth has penned a new one-year contract which will take his association with the football club up to ten years.
The Rams’ stalwart, who initially joined the club on loan from Watford in March 2013 before making his move permanent that summer, has signed an extension to his contract until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
The news comes as a significant boost for Derby ahead of the start of the 2022/23 Sky Bet League One season this weekend.
A popular figure in the Rams’ squad, the 33-year-old, who started his career with Scottish side Dundee, has experienced a mixture of highs and lows whilst with the club.
He was a consistent member of the squad during the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns before he suffered the first of three serious knee injuries in November 2015.
After working hard and battling back to fitness, he suffered the same injury four games into his comeback during the 2016/17 season and was ruled out for another lengthy period.
Forsyth returned strongly once more and made 35 appearances during the 2017/18 campaign as Derby reached the Sky Bet Championship play-offs. However, he had another significant hurdle to overcome once again in November 2018 as the left-back suffered his third ACL injury in a fixture against Aston Villa which ruled him out for another prolonged period.
The defender once again worked hard, displaying great mental strength and resilience, and one year later he returned to the squad and played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Preston North End at Pride Park Stadium.
The versatile defender would go on to make 25 appearances in the 2019/20 campaign and made his 200th Rams appearance the 3-2 victory over Millwall in June 2020, Derby’s first game following the COVID-19 outbreak.
Forsyth played 21 times for Derby during the 2020/21 season, before the defender enjoyed his most prolific campaign in front of goal last season as he scored three times in 29 appearances.
The Scottish defender has made 256 appearances for Derby, scoring seven goals, and his experience will be valuable as Derby prepare for life in the third tier for the first time since 1986.
During his time with the Rams he has also been capped four times by Scotland at international level.
