Curtis Davies was delighted to see supporters back inside Pride Park Stadium for the first time since March 2020 as Derby County drew 1-1 with Huddersfield Town yesterday.
The defender, who re-signed for the club on the eve of the game to begin his fifth year with the club, applied pressure to Terriers defender Levi Colwell as he bundled the ball into his own net to put the Rams ahead six minutes before the break.
The goal, which was the first scored in front of supporters since Chris Martin’s penalty against Blackburn Rovers in 3-0 victory 17 months previous, was met with huge cheers as Rams fans shouted in celebration.
Whilst Derby surrendered that lead just before half time, as Naby Sarr headed home an equaliser, the noise inside the stadium was something which was missed last season and made a huge difference.
And Davies, who is in his fifth season with the club, was pleased to have them back in the stadium, where they belong.
“We are delighted to have them back,” he told RamsTV. “I was speaking to a lot of the young lads before the game and it is the first time a lot of them have played in front of crowds.
“Louie Sibley famously scored that hat-trick at Millwall in the first game behind closed doors. It was a big moment for a lot of them – especially with Pride Park rocking like that with the first game of the season excitement.
“I have got to give them a lot of credit, because it would have been easy for them to come with the doom and gloom and be bit negative, but they got behind the lads from the first minute to the last.
“From myself and from the team, we appreciate that and we need it coming throughout the season because we need all the positivity we can get to help us get results and push us up the league.”
