Derby County Community Trust are teaming up with the Derbyshire Institute of Sport and The Great British Children’s Challenge to provide bikes to families in need this winter.

As part of the ‘Stay Safe. Stay Fit. Stay Connected.’ initiative which has been running since the beginning of the pandemic, the overall aim to support fans and their families remains of utmost important as the winter months approach.

Supporters will be able to provide much needed means of transport to those who may be unable to buy a new bike. This could enable adults to commute to new jobs or provide Christmas presents for children who may go without this year.

Old bikes which are no longer in use can be donated on Thursday 29th October at the Cycle Recycle donation point at Pride Park Stadium from 5:30pm-8pm. Adult and children’s bikes of all sizes are welcomed.

Volunteers from across Derby County, the Derbyshire Institute of Sport and The Great British Children’s Challenge will then service the bike and get them back to road-worthy condition.

All refurbished bikes will then be distributed by the Community Trust’s Inclusion team to individuals and families within our network in time for Christmas.

Simon Carnall, Head of Community, said: “This year, more than ever, we are aiming to provide more opportunities and resources for those who may be at a disadvantage as a result of the pandemic.

“Since April and the launch of the food donation hub at Pride Park Stadium we have been supporting our communities through the toughest times many of us have ever faced.

“Working with the Derbyshire Institute for Sport and The Great British Children’s Challenge to offer this service will provide a lifeline to many and allow them to commute, get to school or increase their physical activity.

“Every bike donated will make a real difference to those families we work with.”

The Great British Children’s Challenge will also support a similar scheme ran in Nottingham by Notts County Football in the Community.

Families who receive the bikes will be encouraged to keep active by taking part in The Great British Children’s Challenge’s Tour de France themed activity through their Riding into the Future challenge: thegreatbritishchildrenschallenge.co.uk/189-2/

Please visit the donation hub at Pride Park Stadium on Thursday 29th October from 5:30pm-8.00pm with any older bikes that you are willing to donate. Social distancing will be in place at all times.
