Derby County Under-18s got their 2020/21 campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Sunderland.
Bartosz Cybulski and Max Bardell scored the first half goals for the Young Rams as they got their season off to the best possible start.
It did not take long for Derby to open their accounts for the season as they took the lead inside the opening four minutes of the game.
The ball invitingly for Cybulski who fired low into the bottom corner to give the Rams the early lead.
The goal spurred the Rams on as they went close to a second on two occasions as Seb Thompson forced a good save from the Sunderland goalkeeper, whilst Cybulski saw an effort go inches wide.
Derby did get their second on 17 minutes, this time from a corner. Defender Bardell rose highest from Will Grewal-Pollard’s set piece and headed Derby’s second of the afternoon.
The Young Rams retained possession well and went into the break in the lead, however, they had to ride a spell of pressure from the visitors early into the second half.
They defended well with Eli Christie and Hugo Jinkinson both remaining solid at the heart of the defence.
Whilst the chances dried up, the Rams started to take more control proceedings. Rhys Brailsford almost scored a third before the end but the Rams had to settle for just two as they got their season off to a positive start.
