Derby County will get their 2020/21 campaign underway on Saturday afternoon when they take on Sky Bet League 2 side Barrow AFC at Pride Park Stadium in the First Round of the Carabao Cup (12pm kick-off).

Derby will be looking to progress past the First Round hurdle for the fifth season in a row when they take on last season's National League champions.

The cup clash will be the first competitive meeting between the two sides since a Third Division North fixture at the Baseball Ground, which finished in a 3-3 draw, in January 1957.

dcfc.co.uk has gathered all the information you will need to know ahead of Saturday's game at Pride Park.

TEAM NEWS…

Skipper Wayne Rooney, striker Martyn Waghorn and wideman Tom Lawrence will all miss the game due to injury.

Rooney and Waghorn have muscle injuries, while Lawrence is sidelined with a shoulder problem he sustained in July against Leeds United.

Goalkeeper David Marshall is unavailable as he is on international duty with Scotland, so Kelle Roos is expected to start in goal.

Jason Knight missed Tuesday’s pre-season friendly against Sheffield United after being called up to a training camp for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21s, but he has been given permission to return to Derby in order to be in the matchday squad.

Summer signing Mike te Wierik is in line to make his competitive Rams debut after signing from Dutch side Groningen, but Krystian Bielik remains out of action as he continues to progress in his rehabilitation work after suffering a long-term knee injury in January.

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS…

Speaking to RamsTV ahead of Saturday's cup tie, Derby boss Phillip Cocu said: We just focus on ourselves.

“We are playing at Pride Park, so that’s always a great feeling for us and we want to get off to a good start.

“The league begins next weekend and if we can get a win, then it will be good for all players for the motivation and confidence to focus on the next game against Reading.

“It definitely won’t be easy against Barrow."

More pre-match comments from Cocu, and on-loan defender Matt Clarke, can be found across dcfc.co.uk and also on RamsTV.

COMPETITION FORMAT…

All Carabao Cup First Round-Fifth Round matches shall be of 90 minutes’ duration and in the event of the scores being level at the end of 90 minutes, no extra time shall be played and the winners shall be determined by penalty kicks in the traditional ABAB format.

SUBSTITUTE RULES…

A temporary matchday rule was put in place for the final nine games of the 2019/20 season, following the resumption of the season after a three-month suspension, when it came to substitutes in games.

Clubs were allowed to make up to to five changes over the course of 90 minutes from a possible nine players.

This has now reverted back to the traditional three substitutions being allowed, with seven substitutes permitted to be named.

GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY…

Goal line technology will be used where a stadium has it installed, with Derby’s Pride Park Stadium having the relevant software in place during recent seasons.

WHO’S THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE…

Ollie Yates will be the man in the middle at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Yates oversaw 30 games in the 2019/20 season across Sky Bet League 1, League 2, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup and the EFL Trophy.

The official will be overseeing his first Derby fixture at the weekend, having never previously taken charge of a match featuring the Rams.

Yates will be assisted by Andrew Dallison and Abbas Khan on the lines, whilst Benjamin Speedie has been appointed as the fourth official.

STAY AT HOME…

Derby County is continuing to urge supporters to stay away from stadiums when matches are played, with the UK Government advice remaining the same relating to playing behind-closed-doors at this time.

Matches are still being played behind closed doors with the safety of supporters, club personnel and the frontline services remaining the principle priority at this time.

Consequently, supporters will not be permitted entry to any area of the stadiums and extra security measures around the immediate area including car parks will be in place when staging matches.

Supporters are also urged to maintain social distancing guidelines and avoid congregating outside stadiums or gatherings to watch matches, as part of a new campaign message: ‘When we play, please stay away’ ahead of all EFL matches.

The club and the Derbyshire Constabulary are united in one message to fans - support the Rams by watching from home.
