Baiano On Target As Derby Claim All Three Points Against Coventry City

Pictured here is former Derby County striker Francesco Baiano celebrating his goal in the Rams’ 3-1 home win over Coventry City at Pride Park Stadium in November 1997.

Derby, only a few months into life at their new home, were in impressive form as they claimed all three points against the Sky Blues.

Baiano got the ball rolling with a low left-foot drive in the first half after Lee Carsley’s cross from the left fell invitingly into his path.

The Italian was fouled in the penalty area as Derby were able to double their lead soon afterwards, with his fellow countryman Stefano Eranio doing the necessary from 12 yards to put Jim Smith’s side in control.

Paulo Wanchope added a third before half-time as he raced clean through on goal to find the back of the net with deft chipped finish.

Derby remained in control after the break too, although they weren’t able to add their tally in the pouring rain.

Coventry did manage to pull a goal back in the second period as Darren Huckerby fired home from a tight angle, but it wasn’t enough to deny the Rams a home win.

Derby finished the campaign in ninth place in the Premiership table, with Baiano netting 13 goals in all competitions.
