Mart Poom Signs For Derby County
Mart Poom established himself as a beloved Derby County goalkeeper after signing for the club 23 years ago.
Jim Smith brought the shot-stopper to Derby after working with him while he was at the helm at Portsmouth, though he only made four league appearances for Pompey – his first club in English football - before returning to his former club, Flora on loan.
The Estonia international joined with Costa Rican duo, Paulo Wanchope and Mauricio Solis, with Poom and Wanchope making their debuts for the club against Manchester United at Old Trafford on 5th April 1997, though Wanchope stole the show that day with a solo goal that will never be forgotten in a 3-2 victory for the Rams.
Poom went on to make 166 appearances for the Rams across six seasons in the Premier League and half of a season in the First Division before joining Sunderland. Poom’s love from the Derby faithful was shown maybe most of all on his return to Pride Park Stadium with the Black Cats. Despite scoring a last gasp goal to take victory away from Derby in a 1-1 draw, he received a standing ovation from the Rams fans.
