With nine games left to play this season, there is still a lot to play for in the Sky Bet Championship, according to Derby County striker Chris Martin.

The 31-year-old found the target twice on Sunday in a convincing 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers, moving up to 18th in the club’s all-time goalscoring list on 74 goals.

It took his tally to 10 goals for the season in all competitions, with nine of them coming during the league campaign.

And with less than a quarter of the season now remaining, this is when the league starts to intensify.

Derby will have a big say in the final standings as they face teams in and around the play-off positions, as they prepare for a trip to Millwall, who sit eighth, on Saturday.

Martin, who has been with the club since 2013, knows the Rams need to be at their best between now and the end of the season to ensure they finish as high up the league as possible.

“There are a lot of tough games between now and the end of the season and we have given ourselves a shout,” he told RamsTV following the victory over Blackburn on Sunday.

“Anything can happen. There are a lot of teams between us and those top six places and we just need to continue to put the performances in.

“If we continue to perform at the level that we did today then we will give ourselves a right good chance of being one of the names in the top six.

“If we don’t, then we will have to grind it out, but something is brewing away under the surface and hopefully we can carry it on.

“Everyone has stepped up and it not only shows the ability we have in the dressing room but also that character.

“Hopefully we can use that many times between now and the end of the season.”
