Derby County’s Under-23s are looking to close the gap at the top of Premier League 2 - Division 1 as they face Tottenham Hotspur at the Loughborough University Stadium tonight (Monday 13th January, 7pm kick-off).
The Rams could move to within one point of top-of-the-table Chelsea with a win against Spurs, who sit in eighth position in the table.
So far, it’s been an impressive campaign for Derby, who are unbeaten in their last three games in the division.
A 3-3 draw with league leaders Chelsea was followed up with a 4-2 victory over Southampton before the winter break, and the Rams kicked off 2020 with a 2-2 draw against Arsenal last week.
However, the Rams will be disappointed that they didn’t gain all three points from that game after leading 2-0 heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
A Jahmal Hector-Ingram double either side of half time put Derby in a commanding position but two late goals, one an own goal, pegged the Rams back as they had to settle for a point.
Tottenham, in contrast, have struggled this season and sit six points off the relegation places at the halfway stage of this season.
They have suffered two straight defeats either side of the new year. They were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City to finish off 2019, whilst they lost 1-0 at home to Chelsea last week.
Speaking ahead of the game, Under-23s coach Craig Short told RamsTV: “It will be a tough one. If we can play as well as we can then we are a match for anyone.
“We need to make sure we have the right mentality and work ethic and if we do that then we have a great chance.”
Central defender Ethan Wassall also told RamsTV: “We have done really well this season. We have had a lot of tough games in this division and we’ve come through the challenges positively. Tottenham is another test for us and we have to stand up to that.”
