Phillip Cocu has confirmed that Duane Holmes and Graeme Shinnie will both feature for Derby County's Under-23s at Southampton tonight.
Darren Wassall’s side face the Saints at their Staplewood Training Ground (7pm kick-off) looking for their first win of the new Premier League 2 season.
Their cause will be helped by Holmes - who has been recovering from an injury picked up from international duty with the USA in the summer - and Shinnie - who was not included in the matchday squad to take on Stoke City in the Sky Bet Championship at the weekend.
Goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell and striker Chris Martin are also set to line up for the Under-23s.
Speaking to RamsTV on Monday, Cocu said: “Duane Holmes will play for the first time after his injury so that’s good for him. Training is important but to play games on a regular basis is even more important.”
The Derby boss revealed that Shinnie, who joined the Rams from Aberdeen in the summer, is in line for some minutes tonight in his pre-match press conference to preview Bristol City’s visit to Pride Park Stadum on Tuesday evening.
He said: “Graeme will play with the Under-23s tonight. He just has to work a little longer with me and my staff to work together.
“He has his qualities but we have a lot of players with good qualities, that’s why there is competition within the team.
“Sometimes some players can be disappointed to be out of the team or in the Under-23s but they can come back in. That depends on themselves and how they perform in games, in training sessions and if we need certain qualities in the next game.”
