A Martyn Waghorn hat-trick lifted Derby County to a 5-2 victory over Burton Albion in Phillip Cocu’s first game in charge for the Rams on UK soil.

The win saw Derby lift the Bass Vase, with proceeds from the game going to charities.

Waghorn impressed with a treble of first-half goals including a tap in, a long-range rocket and a powerful header before adding a second-half assist for Mason Bennett. Max Bird rounded off the scoring in extra time when he rolled in the fifth goal of the game from a Rams corner.

Goals for the local rivals came from John Brayford and Scott Fraser.

Waghorn was causing problems early on for the Brewers, coming close inside the opening ten minutes with a good run in from behind to force a save by Stephen Bywater. The deflection fell into the path of Jayden Bogle who sliced his effort over.

On the 16 minute mark, Derby’s no. 9 got off the mark. A great ball from the left was floated into the area to Florian Jozefzoon at the back post. The winger knocked it back for Kieran Dowell who’s initial shot was saved, but Waghorn was there for the follow up.

The lead was almost immediately doubled when Waghorn fed to Tom Lawrence, who drew another save by former Ram, Bywater.

Burton levelled the score soon after from a corner. Kelle Roos initially cleared the ball away, but it fell to Brayford to tap in.

After Bennett forced another save from the Brewers’ keeper, Waghorn retook the lead with a fine finish from range. The striker rifled a shot from 20 yards out which rattled off the post and in the back of the net.

Just over ten minutes later, he completed his hat-trick when he headed in a cross from Bogle.

With five minutes left to play in the first half, the Rams kept pushing forward as they continue to put into practice the philosophies of Cocu.

Lawrence again was denied by Bywater who batted away his effort to Dowell who struck the post and the rebound landed to Bennett who struck wide.

It didn’t take long for the Rams to take hold of the second-half. This time Waghorn turned provider as he fired a cross in from the left for Bennett to fly in and fire into the roof of the net with his first touch.

The Brewers pulled on back five minutes after the restart when Fraser fired a low effort from just inside the area into the bottom left corner.

With just over 15 minutes to play, Roos made an instinctive save with his feet to deny the Brewers from close range and straight down the other end, good ball movement by Derby made its way to Tom Huddlestone for a volley that was tipped over by Bywater.

Cocu made 10 changes with ten minutes remaining after Jason Knight replaced Dowell earlier in the half to give all 22 players a run out.

With the seconds running out in extra time, Bird added the finishing touches by rolling in from close range from a Derby corner.
