Derby City Council has issued a statement in relation to the A52 Wyvern Improvement scheme which will have an impact on supporters attending Derby County’s clash with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday 5th May.

A major part of the A52 Wyvern Improvement Scheme is the replacement of the footbridge, which links the residential area of Chaddesden to the Wyvern and Pride Park area. To prepare for demolition, the current footbridge will be closed to the public on Monday 29th April, and demolition will take place over the weekend of Friday 17th May.

In order to create a safe working environment, reduce disruption, and for demolition work to take place as quickly as possible, a full road closure will be in place on both carriageways of the A52.This will be from Pentagon Island to the Raynesway junction, between 8.00pm on Friday 17th May until 6.00am on Monday 20th May.Advanced warning signs advising drivers of the closures will be in place during week commencing 22nd April.Signed diversion routes will also be in place.

Due to the limited time available to complete the work while the road closure is in place, work will be carried out around the clock.Although noise disruption is inevitable with work of this scale, we will try, where possible, to minimise noise disruption.

In terms of diversions while the bridge is closed, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the Highfield Lane footbridge to cross the A52. The pedestrian diversion route will be along the footway adjacent to the A52 to Highfield Lane Bridge, then along Chequers Road to Wyvernside. The pedestrian crossing on Wyvern Way will be relocated closer to the roundabout, outside Pizza Hut.

It is anticipated that the new footbridge will open next Spring, with the completion of the wider A52 Transport Improvement Scheme by Summer 2020.

Improving the A52 will bring great benefits to a congested part of Derby’s roads; including better access to the city, improved air quality and a boost for our economy.

Further details about the Improvement Scheme are on the A52 Scheme webpage. This will be regularly updated, along with social media updates as the scheme progresses. Read the latest news announcement and associated FAQs on our newsroom.
