Derby County Under-18’s Premier League – North title hopes took a slight dent as a second-half Mason Greenwood double saw them fall to defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

The Rams however remain three points clear at the top of the table having played a game more than Liverpool, who possess a lower goal difference, fewer than Derby’s by five.

Justin Walker’s side spent much of the game ahead after Morgan Whittaker’s early side-footed finish gave them the lead. They created plenty of opportunities to add to their advantage, but were undone by two quick-fire Greenwood goals in the final 25 minutes.

Whittaker’s opener came deservedly after a fantastic Derby start when Lee Buchanan’s low cross found the in-form striker who slotted calmly past Jacob Carney from close range.

The Rams almost doubled their lead on multiple occasions, striking the bar through Whittaker and Callum Minkley in the opening 45 minutes. Javaun Splatt and Jason Knight also had opportunities with the latter seeing a shot blocked on the line by a United defender ten minutes into the second period.

They were soon made to rue their missed chances as Greenwood headed home from a pinpoint cross to level the score-line. The front man, less than three minutes later, put the visitors in front with a powerful strike from outside the area.

Derby pressed for an equaliser but were unable to beat the strong United back line, ensuring their final Premier League – North match against Wolves will be even more decisive as they look to finish the season as champions.

What’s To Come…

In their last match of the 2018/19 season, the Under-18s face Wolverhampton Wanderers with victory potentially winning them the Premier League – North Under-18 title.

The Rams ran out 2-1 winners when the sides met earlier in the season with Tyree Wilson and Whittaker scoring.

The game will take place on 27th April and will be played at Shrewsbury Sports Village, kick off 11pm.
