Full back Calum Macdonald felt his Derby County Under-23 side fully deserved the three points in today’s Premier League 2 – Division 1 win against Liverpool Under-23s this afternoon.

The defender was a key part of the 2-3 win as he cleared an effort off the line to deny the hosts going two goals ahead, whilst minutes afterwards, he notched the equaliser.

He headed home at the back post to bring the Rams level and then provided the assist to Louie Sibley who netted the winner with only five minutes remaining.

“I’m delighted we managed to get the win and I thought the lads were excellent,” Macdonald told dcfc.co.uk. “I felt in the first 20 minutes we sat off them and gave them a bit too much respect but then after we decided to press against them, we realised that we can turn the ball over and have the quality in the team to hurt them.

“In the second half I think it was one sided. We dominated possession, we dominated the ball and hurt them in key areas and I thought we thoroughly deserved the win.

“We showed great character, especially after their second goal went in, because when we’re away from home and they get it back to 2-2, we could have sat in and played defensively but we got the goal to win it.

“The lads should be proud of the way we played, especially in that second half, and it was great to get the three points.”

The header was Macdonald’s first goal of the season. “I was very pleased to get the goal,” he admitted.

“I’m not even meant to be up for corners but Liverpool didn’t leave anyone up so I just ran in late, and because I did, there was nobody picking me up so luckily it dropped on my head and I found the corner.

“To get the assist later in the game was pleasing too but the most important thing was the team got the win and we’re all buzzing.”
