Fikayo Tomori was denied his first Derby County goal against Oldham Athletic by media outlets but the new Ram is convinced the opening goal should be credited to him.
The Rams secured their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win over the Latics.
Despite a comfortable and controlled win over the League Two side, it wasn’t without a hint of bad luck for Derby. Tomori lost the credit for the first goal before Jozefzoon fired into the net only for it to be disallowed.
The Rams took the lead just after the half hour mark when Harry Wilson directed a free-kick into the box and it was seemingly the on-loan Chelsea defender that powered it home.
As the 20-year-old sprinted off to celebrate his first goal in a Derby shirt in his second appearance it made it even more convincing the goal belonged to him.
However, there was confusion when the goal was credited as a Sam Graham own goal.
Tomori is adamant it should be his and told his side of the story to RamsTV: “It should have been credited to me, I thought it was my goal!
“I haven’t seen it back, but I made contact with the ball. I’m not even sure if the other guy touched it, but if he did, it was going on target anyway.
“We have been working a lot on deliveries and trying to focus on getting in the right areas in the box. I felt like the ball was going to go in the middle, so I ran there and I was lucky the ball landed to me.
“But, that’s just how it goes. It was a good win for us and I’m happy to be in the next round.”
There was no doubt surrounding the second goal as Mason Mount’s pinpoint accuracy and superb strike doubled the lead.
Jayden Bogle, Scott Malone, George Evans and Jack Marriott all made their Derby debuts as the Rams dominated from the start.
Despite the competition being two leagues below, Tomori explained that the team treated the match-up as they do any other.
“Today we wanted to put in a performance and win. Knowing it’s a cup game and against Oldham, we didn’t know what could have happened,” Tomori said.
“We approached it from the first whistle how we should have and I think the result was fair.”
For now, the Carabao Cup will be put on the back burners and attention quickly returns to the Sky Bet Championship.
Derby will head out on the road again to The Den for what always promises a tasty fixture against Millwall.
Tomori is ready for it and believes if the Rams approach the game in the same manner as they did against Oldham, then the result will come.
“It’s back to the Championship on Saturday and get back to winning ways there.
“Going to Millwall is never an easy game. It’s going to be a fight and we have to be ready for that.
“Today was a mini-game for that, if we approach the game in the same way on Saturday then I’m sure we can get the same result.”
