Derby County Under-23s suffered a 3-1 defeat to hand the Steve Bloomer Trophy over to Real Unión at Stadium Gal in Spain.

Cameron Cresswell scored the only goal for the young Rams, while a goal from Mikel Orbegozo and a brace from Asier Etxaburu lifted the Spanish Segunda División B side to victory.

It was the second meeting of the clubs that are bound together by the legendary striker, Steve Bloomer, who made history at both outfits.

The late forward needs little introduction to Rams fans as Derby’s all-time leading scorer with 331 goals in 525 matches over two spells with the club between 1891 and 1914.

Last October the Rams lifted the inaugural trophy dedicated to celebrating the sides’ relationship after a 2-1 victory with goals from Lewis Walker and Alex Cover.

However, for the next year it will remain in Spain with the club that Bloomer guided to the Copa del Rey in 1924 after beating Real Madrid in the final.

Darren Wassall’s side integrated the clash into their pre-season preparations, being put through their paces in Northern Spain the day before.

The Rams will continue to prepare for their 2018/19 Premier League 2 Division 1 campaign that kicks-off at Pride Park Stadium against Blackburn Rovers on August 13th with friendlies against Lincoln City and Sheffield Wednesday.
