Derby County Community Trust will celebrate six months of ‘Active Recovery’ on Tuesday 20th March… with the help of Stiliyan Petrov and Geoff Horsfield!

A free exercise and rehabilitation programme, Active Recovery was established to work and help anyone who has lived with the consequences of cancer across the past five years.

The day will fall as part of the EFL Day of Action, presenting a unique opportunity for all EFL clubs to simultaneously raise awareness of the impact they are having by creating a national platform to highlight the community work that happens across 72 towns and cities, 365 days a year, seven days a week.

Former Aston Villa and Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov’s battle with Leukemia is well documented and forced him to retire from professional football – he has since gone on to set up the Petrov Foundation a charity to fund cancer research and support families struggling with the disease.

Former Birmingham, Wigan Athletic, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United striker Geoff Horsfield battled with testicular cancer during his playing career, he went public following his recovery to help spread awareness of the disease and promote men’s health issues.

Participants from the programme will be present at the event along with cancer groups from Derby Hospital. Current participants will speak of their own experiences with cancer and how Derby County Community Trust and the Active Recovery programme has helped them.

Nigel Spencer from Duffield who has been taking part in the programme alongside his wife said: “I feel much better, especially since our stress is now being reduced and we feel more able to cope with the pressures imposed on us a family due to the sarcoma cancer I had in my leg.

“We are feeling we can benefit tremendously by taking part in these fitness sessions regularly.

“Acitve Recovery is a great programme predominantly helping me (but also my wife) overcome both the physical and mental stresses in our lives, and to help us both get healthier and fitter to support each other.”

Participants will go on to take part in a low impact-based workout to showcase the activities on the Active Recovery programme.

The event will be hosted by former Telegraph Journalist and Derby County Community Trust Trustee Nick Britten alongside Derby County Ambassador and former player Michael Johnson.
