Two of the region’s most high-profile charities that aim to improve the lives of people through sport have merged.
Derby County Community Trust and Sporting Futures said the decision to unite made ‘perfect sense’ given the existing close relationship between the two organisations and the complementary nature of what they both offer.
The integration of Sporting Futures into Derby County Community Trust will strengthen the Trust’s community engagement offering, extending the depth and breadth of services the charity can offer to Derbyshire’s young people living in the hardest to reach communities.
Both charities use sport as a focal point to change people’s lives for the better and are supported by local and national trusts and initiatives alike.
Simon Carnall, Head of Community at Derby County Community Trust, said, “Derby County Community Trust has a great history of working collaboratively with Sporting Futures. We are delighted that we can take this relationship to the next level by integrating Sporting Futures’ staff and delivery programmes into our wider Trust.
“As an organisation, we are committed to developing and delivering programmes across Derbyshire that improve the lives of our local community, and bringing Sporting Futures’ quality of staff, expertise, track record of delivery and partners into the Community Trust enables us to do even more of this amazing work. We are delighted that we have been able to make this amalgamation work and are excited for what the future will bring.”
Will Turner, Director of Sporting Futures, said: “The synergy between the work delivered by ourselves at Sporting Futures and specifically in the current inclusion work delivered by the Trust is obvious, so the exploration of merging the two charities formed naturally.
“As discussions have gone on, this merge makes perfect sense - putting both charities together in terms of growth, experience and knowledge will add further value and credibility to the core charity functions as well as increasing the profile of the Derby 10K and other events.Both sets of trustees and organisations have now agreed to take this forward.”
The move will see Sporting Futures’ flagship event and fundraiser, the well-known Derby 10K, come under Derby County Community Trust’s umbrella.
Emma Pilgrim, Events Manager at Sporting Futures said: “The event has gone from strength to strength, and now in its 18th year the involvement of the Trust will only serve to support the growth of the race even further.
“All previous runners can expect the same race organisation and route as previous years, and all profits made will go towards supporting the same charitable activities that Sporting Futures have always delivered across Derbyshire.”
Sporting Futures’ work under the Trust will now proceed with immediate effect.
