Though the result last weekend for Derby County’s Under-18s was a 1-1 draw, Jordan Mills says it was a step in the right direction as they look to return to winning ways.

In the first fixture of the newly-formed Premier League Cup, Justin Walker’s and Rory Delap’s side saw Jack Stretton's first-half goal cancelled out before half-time by Swansea City, but it was a game that they could well have won.

And with confidence flowing once again, Mills believes that it was exactly the sort of performance that the side needed before going into this week’s League test against Blackburn away from home.

Speaking to dcfc.co.uk, the second-year scholar said: “It was important last week to go back to the form that we showed early in the season.

“Even though we did draw against Swansea, I felt that we did do that and it was still a good performance, It looked as though we were back on track.

"The performance against Swansea felt good. We had more than enough chances to win the game, especially in the last 25 minutes and so in the end, we were unlucky.

“It’s always going to be difficult when you go to Blackburn.

“I don’t think since I’ve been a scholar that we’ve beat Blackburn away so it’s going to be tough test, but hopefully we can get rid of that curse, if you like, away against them.”

On a personal note, whilst it has been a positive beginning for the squad collectively, equally as successful has it been for Mills.

So far this season, the left back has started all five games for the Under-18s and he admitted that he is really enjoying the experience at the moment.

Discussing his current form and reflecting on the tests that scholar-life offers, Mills added: “We are all excited to get back to the performance levels that we should be at, hopefully now we can just pick up another three points.

“On a personal level, n a way, I’ve found things difficult this season because you know more of what to expect.

“It’s getting easier but that doesn’t mean I’m any less focused on staying in the team, because all I want to do is play football.

“I’m feeling good at the moment and I’m really enjoying my football.

“Hopefully I can keep that up and keep my place in the squad.”
