Derby County duo David Nugent and Tom Huddlestone attended a Holiday Coaching session at Powerleague Derby earlier this week.
The coaching session, organised by the Derby County Community Trust, has been taking place at the venue across the summer holidays, providing a great opportunity for youngsters to practice their skills, take part in tournaments and make new friends whilst they are off school.
The surprise appearance of the pair lead to a lot of excitement amongst the youngsters, many of whom were big Rams fans and couldn’t wait to meet their heroes.
Both players got involved with the session by taking part in matches and going head-to-head in a crossbar challenge.
A question and answer session followed, allowing participants to pose questions to the pair.
Huddlestone spoke of his delight in re-joining Derby and one child even gave Nugent the opportunity to talk through what he described as a ‘wonder goal’ on his England debut.
Once the activities had come to an end, both Huddlestone and Nugent took plenty of time out to sign shirts and pose for photographs - much to delight of all in attendance.
Following the appearance, Huddlestone said: “It was good and nice to give a bit back. The kids see current players coming down and get excited so it’s nice to give something back to the community.
“Myself and Nuge were sweating a bit; I’m not sure how the kids felt after being here all day but they seem to be loving it and it’s a good incentive.”
On Derby County’s link with the community he added: “A city like Derby, it’s a one club city, so for us to be a part of the community is a big aspect which puts us closer to the fans and puts them a bit more in touch with us.
“Things like this are beneficial for the players and the kids here at the same time.”
Nugent added: “It’s good to come out here and give something back, I enjoy it as much as they do!
“They put me through my paces! It’s just nice to get involved, they don’t want you to come here and just stand and watch so it’s nice to get involved and chat with them.
“In the summer holidays the kids need something to do. It’s vital for us as players to come out and give something back to the community and there’s nothing better than coming here and having a kick about with the kids, because they enjoy it, we enjoy it and it’s good for everybody.”
Holiday coaching will continue on a weekly basis at Powerleague and other venues across Derbyshire until the end of the summer holidays.
