Back in Germany for a second successive year, Derby County’s pre-season preparations will continue to gather momentum when they face Kaiserslautern later today, kick-off: 3pm BST.
The Rams faced Karlsruher this time last year ahead of the 2016/17 season – a game they won 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Darren Bent and Andreas Weimann.
This year, Derby are returning to face Kaiserslautern and Russell is anticipating the Red Devils will pose a step up in quality from last campaign’s opposition.
The Rams’ latest opponents – one of Germany’s most famous football teams – play in the second tier of German football and finished 13th last season.
Kaiserslautern also play at the stunning Fritz-Walter-Stadion – a 49,780-seater stadium used in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
With all of that combined, Russell is looking forward to seeing how Derby pit themselves up against Kaiserslautern.
He told RamsTV: “We went to Germany last year and that was really difficult playing in the heat.
“Karlsruher were a decent side, but Kaiserslautern are going to be a step up from that. It’s one that we are looking forward to.
“We’re playing at a beautiful stadium too and these are the sort of pre-season games – against teams from abroad – you want to play in. It will be interesting, again, to see how we come up.”
