Derby County Community Trust were at Reigate Park Primary School on Monday to kick-off a week of activity - all in celebration of Girls’ Football Week.
Girls’ Football week will run from 10-16th October and has been developed from the success of previous Women’s Football Weeks which began back in 2012.
Women’s football is the largest female team sport in the country and the third largest team sport after men’s football and cricket.
During the FIFA Women’s World Cup, The FA launched #WeCanPlay, a campaign to encourage more females to play football.
The morning saw pupils from Reigate Park get involved in a special assembly to launch the week.
Derby County Community Trust staff were present to teach the entire school about girls’ football and opportunities for young females looking to get involved in the sport around Derby.
Derby County mascot Ewie made a special appearance at the assembly and even took part in a penalty shoot-out with the Reigate pupils.
Following the assembly, Women’s Football Coordinator at DCCT, Laura Weston said: “It was great to come down toReigate Parktoday and teach the pupils about girls’ football week and sporting opportunities around the city.
“The kids all seemed to enjoy it and I hope we’ve encouraged them to get more involved in football.”
To continue the celebration, Monday 10th October, will see the Community Trust host a free football session for girls 11+ at the Racecourse Ground from 6pm until 7pm.
This will be ideal for anyone looking to get into football for the first time or returning back to playing.

The Derby City School Sport Partnership will also be very active during Girl’s Football Week. On Thursday 13th October, they will be hosting a football tournament for year 5/6 girls at Mackworth Sports Centre.
The winners will play in the county finals later in the year.
