A group of under 16 males and females, both representing the Derby County Community Trust, took part in the Premier League Kicks Cup last week.

Hosted at the Forest Recreation Ground Pavilion in Nottingham the teams – made up of players that attend the Premier League Kicks courses delivered by the Community Trust – participated amongst over 70 teams.

The under 16 females team were unlucky not to progress from the group stages, having lost their first three games, and battled back by beating Swansea, Manchester United and Southampton to only just miss out.

The under 16 males also performed well, however luck just wasn’t on their side, drawing one game and losing five, including a couple of last minute blows against Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic. Unfortunately, they also left the competition at the group stages.

The competition itself means a lot more than performances, it is a day that brings together communities from across the country to celebrate football.

Following the event Derby County Community Trust coach Laura Weston said: “We had a great day in Nottingham and both teams really enjoyed it.

“Premier League Kicks is a fantastic programme and the event showed what an incredible pathway it is for young people in the community.”

In previous years, Premier League stars such as Raheem Sterling, Wilfried Zaha, Theo Walcott and Marcus Rashford have all been scouted at the events after coming through the Premier League Kicks programme.

Premier League Kicks sessions run all across Derby on a weekly basis and are free of charge for anyone aged 11-19 years of age.
