FACT FILE:Founded on 29 November 1912 and eight years after its original launch Football Club, Amisia Meppen originally started out as a sports club after linking up with a men’s gymnastics club – forming the Meppen Gymnastic and sporting club 1912.This merger lasted a year, though, and in 1921 the football section parted – naming itself SV Meppen 1912, the name which it still holds to this very day. After plying their trade in the lower reaches of the German football divisions, it was not until the end of the Second World War that their meteoric rise began.Meppen’s first title of any sort came in 1961 – 49 years after they were founded – when they lifted the Amateurliga Lower Saxony (IV) Championship.Seven years later, the club claimed their second title, before eventually qualifying and climbing into the Regionalliga Nord for this first time in their history in 1972.Following a league restructure, SV Meppen found themselves playing in the old Oberliga Nord, which ceased in 2008 after the introduction of Third Liga.SVM plied their trade in Oberliga Nord for 13 years until the lifted the Championship at the end of the 1986/87 season – meaning they were promoted to 2. Bundesliga, the German second division. The club’s best recorded finish in their history came in 1995 when they finished sixth in the second tier, whilst also reached the final eight of the German cup competition, DFB-Pokal, in 1997.Meppen lasted 11 years in the professional circuit as their slide back to Oberliga Nord began. In 2003, SVM found themselves in the fifth division of German football (Niedersachsenliga) but Meppen fought back and earned promotion back to the fourth tier at the end of the 2010/11 campaign. At the end of the 2014/15, Meppen were finalists in the State Cup where they lost to their arch rivals and Derby's sister-city VFL Osnabrueck – qualifying them for this season’s DFB-Pokal Cup. The first round has handed them a huge tie against Bundesliga side FC Köln.
