Lee Glover says last week’s 7-1 victory over Stoke City will have no relevance tonight when his Derby County Under 21s face the Potters in the Quarter Finals of the Under 21 Premier League Cup.

After going in at the interval 2-1 up, Derby returned to score five goals in the second half – four of which were in a ruthless six-minute spell – on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite the scoreline, Glover, Derby’s Senior Professional Development Coach, insists his side will have to up their game to another level when they face a Stoke side he labelled as ‘wounded animal’.

Speaking to dcfc.co.uk, he said: “We didn’t expect what happened last week, but that result will bear no relevance on what happens on Monday, it will be a totally different game.

“We will go into it and we will approach the game as we do for any other.

“It was quite a tight game during the first half, but we came out in the second 45 minutes and were really ruthless in front of goal.

“Some of the passing was excellent, but we know we have got to go into the game on Monday and do that again if we are to achieve the result we want.

“We will have to up that performance because Stoke are a wounded animal at the moment and they are going to be dangerous.”

The victory over Stoke was Derby’s biggest since joining the Barclays Under 21 Premier League – Division 2 after achieving Category One Status in the summer.

Glover, though, says his side can still improve in the upcoming fixtures and in one final message called on his players to impose themselves on this evening’s game.

He added: “We think we have done ok in last week’s game, but we know we can still improve.

“We have watched the DVD back and we can see clips where we have been sloppy, clips where we haven’t won duels and clips where we haven’t been good enough in transition.

“We are keeping the players’ feet’s on the ground. There is still room for improvement and that’s what we are saying for the lads. We can still do things better.

“It is going to be a very hard game, a cup game and Stoke will be going out to prove a point.

“They are professional footballers and they have had a bit of a going over so they will be out to prove a point.

“We need to make sure we are right and ready to impose ourselves on the game.”
