Derby County Women went down 2-1 at Liverpool Feds in a tight-run contest in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division at Jericho Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Striker Chenè Muir netted excellently in the second period to pull a goal back, but the Ewes’ hard work couldn’t convert to points as Feds held onto their advantage, which they gained through Courtney Willis’ first half strike and Ellie Fletcher’s impressive goal in the 53rd minute.

Key Moments

Derby made a fast start to the game, with wing-backs Sacha Lewis and Daisy Burt both seeing their work result in near chances for the Ewes, but the hosts’ defence held them off.

Despite the pressure from Derby, Feds thought they’d taken the lead in the 18th minute as Fletcher struck after she was played through on goal, but she was judged offside.

A long free-kick from defender Sarah Jackson produced the first clear-cut chance of the game for the Ewes as Burt latched onto the ball at the back post, but the Newcastle United loanee was denied by a strong save from goalkeeper Cadi Doran.

The hosts had the lead moments later as a sharp attack saw Fletcher take control of a long ball over the top and lob Lucy Jones in the Derby net.

A free-kick again looked dangerous from Derby just before the half-time break when Muir nodded the ball towards the path of Burt, but the Feds goalkeeper was quick to react and claim the ball before the Ewes’ wing-back could steer the ball towards goal.

Fletcher doubled the hosts’ lead in the 53rd minute as she dampened a powerful cross with her first touch and struck on the half-volley, giving Ewes shot-stopper Jones no chance to save.

Sam Griffiths made the Ewes' first changes of the game soon after, with Lily Skeldon and Paris Dalton entering the field and Lewis and Evie McCaffrey departing.

Muir struck to narrow the margin in the 62nd minute as Burt’s cross was nodded into the striker’s path by Camille Jenkins. Muir took the ball on the volley to thunder home from close range inside the penalty area.

The Ewes attacker nearly doubled her tally and equalised in the 68th minute but was thwarted after some alert goalkeeping from Doran steered her strike wide of the post.

Kate Oakley and Ella Hilliard entered the field for Derby in the 72nd minute with Burt and Kira Rai coming off. Helena Meadows also replaced Muir with ten minutes of regulation time remaining as the Ewes were set for a grandstand finish as they searched for an equaliser.

Derby dominated proceedings late into the game but couldn’t find the opening against a resolute Feds defence.

Meadows struck agonisingly wide deep into added time; she received the ball on the edge of the box and shimmied past three players to create a shooting opportunity but sent the ball just off target.

The hosts held on, despite the late fight, to take all three points.

The Ewes now look forward to an East Midlands Derby clash next Sunday as they face high-flying Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division (2pm kick-off).
