Derby County’s preparations for the upcoming 2020/21 season continued on Saturday afternoon with a behind-closed-doors friendly fixture against Sky Bet League 1 side Doncaster Rovers.

The two sides played out a goalless draw at Moor Farm in a game of limited clear-cut chances at either end.

Rovers, managed by former Rams defender Darren Moore, provided another worthwhile workout for Phillip Cocu’s side following their second full week of training ahead of the start of the new campaign next month.

The Rams fielded separate sides for each half, allowing as many players as possible to get match minutes into their legs.

Andre Wisdom made his comeback after being out of action since he was the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery at the end of June. He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital and missed the Rams’ final seven fixture of the 2019/20 season.

Skipper Wayne Rooney also returned after missing the 2-1 victory over Peterborough United at St George’s Park in midweek, while new goalkeeper David Marshall featured in a game situation for the first time in the opening 45 minutes.

The majority of the chances came in the first half, with Jack Marriott twice denied by the Doncaster goalkeeper while defender Craig Forsyth hit the post following a set-play from Rooney.

Marshall was forced into action early on with a save from distance, while the Scotland international also commanded his area well and looked assured in his first 45 minutes for the club.

The second half produced less opportunities, with the most noteworthy being a header from Curtis Davies which flashed wide from Graeme Shinnie’s delivery from the left-hand side.

Overall, there were plenty a number of encouraging signs for Cocu and his staff to take away from the game – while no-doubt they will have also assessed areas to work on in the forthcoming weeks ahead of the 2020/21 campaign getting started.

First Half: Marshall, Wisdom, te Wieirk, Forsyth, Buchanan, Rooney, Bird, Bennett, Whittaker, Knight, Marriott.

Second Half: Roos, Bateman, Davies, Solomon, Lowe, Evans, Shonibare, Shinnie, Ibrahim, Hector-Ingram (Stretton), Jozefzoon.
