Derby County bowed out of the FA Cup in the Third Round
as the Rams’ tie with Leyton Orient was settled via penalties at the Gaughan
Group Stadium on Tuesday night.
Charlie Kelman gave Orient the lead from close range in the 20th minute, but Derby responded four minutes later as an incisive attack was finished off by Dajaune Brown in the box.
After a goalless second half, there was nothing to split the two sides, and the game went into extra time. Orient went down to ten men in the second half of extra time as Sean Clare received a second yellow card and his marching orders.
Key Moments
Early chances went begging for the Rams as Corey Blackett-Taylor and Kane Wilson looked to deliver balls into the box but couldn’t find the pass to unlock the hosts.
Diallang Jaiyesimi played Jamie Donley in on goal in the 9th minute with the Orient player forcing a good block from Derby defender Nat Phillips to see the ball wide.
The hosts upped the pressure on Derby as Clarke and Ethan Galbraith both had shots from distance within a minute of each other as Orient counter-attacked. Clarke’s effort fizzed just wide of the post and Galbraith’s rose high above the stand.
Kelman gave the hosts the lead in the 20th minute after the second ball from a corner dropped favourably in behind the Derby back line and gave him a chance one-on-one to slot the ball into the back of the net.
Liam Thompson had a speculative on-goal in the 23rd minute as he dragged the ball low across goal, but goalkeeper Josh Keeley got down quickly to smother the effort.
A determined attack, started by Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, saw Derby level a minute later. The winger performed a tidy pass into Marcus Harness who broke into the penalty area and squared the ball to Brown who poked the ball home.
Nat Phillips made a vital tackle as Orient surged forward after another fortunate bounce found them in position to break beyond Derby’s defence. Phillips tracked the ball and timed a tackle excellently to see the ball away from danger.
Harness looked to provide his second assist towards the end of the first period as he beat his defender on the right flank and swung in a dangerous cross towards the back post. Mendez-Laing met the delivery with his head, but goalkeeper Keeley was alert to it and got his body behind the effort.
A double change for the Rams at the break saw Ebou Adams and Callum Elder onto the field of play, with Phillips and Liam Thompson making way.
Blackett-Taylor troubled the Orient shot-stopper with a stinging strike in the 55th minute after the winger had started the second half with impetus as he looked to break in down the right wing on multiple occasions.
The winger was the one posing the threat once more in the 63rd minute as he again had the beating of his opposite number on the right wing and cut inside to create space for a low-driven shot that Keeley saved.
Kayden Jackson and Tom Barkhuizen entered the field in place of Brown and Blackett-Taylor in the 67th minute as the Rams looked for a winning goal.
Barkhuizen struck the bar in the 76th minute after a well-worked move and tenacious run from Kane Wilson saw the attacker receive a cut-back on the edge of the box which he struck first time onto the frame of the goal.
Despite both sides looking to create chances in the latter stages, neither was able to find a winning goal within the allotted 90 minutes and added time. with the scores still even and extra time beckoned.
Kane Wilson looked lively at the start of extra time as he
delivered into the box towards Collins, but the striker couldn’t get the
desired connection with the ball to threaten the goal.
Forsyth was in the right place at the right time to see away a dangerous delivery by Donley in the 97th minute.
The first chance of the second half of extra time looked to be the one that would settle the game as Orient’s Jack Currie found himself in behind but he dinked the ball just wide of the post.
Kenzo Goudmijn took a confident strike from the edge of the box but was denied well by Keeley who made a diving stop to deny the Dutchman in the 106th minute of the game.
A second yellow card for Clare saw the hosts down to ten men and Derby with a free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box in the 114th minute.
The resulting free-kick looked to find Adams at the far post but he was in an offside position.
Adams came near with an acrobatic effort in the 120th minute
that saw the ball head just wide of the post. It was to be the last chance of
the match, with the knockout tie decided on penalties.
Collins, Goudmijn, Harness, Jackson and Barkhuizen all netted from the spot in the first kicks and were matched by Orient, also scoring all five spot kicks. Elder saw his effort saved and Obiero scored for Orient in sudden death.
