Derby County centre-back Eiran Cashin admitted a quality goal was the difference as a ‘disciplined’ display wasn’t quite enough to get a result on the road at Sheffield United in the Sky Bet Championship.
Gustavo Hamer’s set-piece strike early in the second half gave the Blades all three points at Bramall Lane as the hosts claimed a 1-0 victory over Paul Warne’s side.
A gritty defensive display from Derby kept the home side at bay until the second period, where United took the lead and held on as they nullified the Rams’ threat.
Cashin spoke with RamsTV after the defeat against the Blades to give his take on the 90 minutes.
On the result in South Yorkshire…
It’s a tough one really, we are disappointed all-in-all. We limited them to few chances and we were disciplined, because we know how good they are. We had a game plan and we stuck to it. It felt like we were better on the ball at times, but in the second half we played into their hands a little bit. We were disappointed with the goal, it’s a hell of a strike and maybe if that didn’t go in, we could get a different outcome. They could have been forced to push on and we might have nicked one on the counter. We worked hard, but sometimes maybe we worked a little bit too hard and we gassed out a bit towards the end.
On the timing of the goal impacting the game…
We had a few chances in the first half and we knew, coming here, it was going to be tough. We weren’t expecting to have that many chances, but we knew we could definitely hit them on the counter and cause some problems. The timing of the goal was not great for us as they have all the cards and they sat in and they let us step in. We caused our own problems at times too, which is something we need to work on and definitely get better at.
On showing resilience despite the result…
To be fair, I don’t think we gave up. Towards the end it became a bit scrappy and we got a bit loose and open, but that’s just from our desire to try and win and get something. It wasn’t pretty at times, so we can maybe learn from that, but our intentions and our fight and our desire to try and win are there for everyone to see. We didn’t give up and in the first half we were good at times. We kept our shape, we were disciplined and we created the odd chance. There were a lot of positives to take out of this one, so that’s what we can take on into next week.
