Derby County’s Ryan Nyambe was an unused substitute as Namibia exited the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-0 loss against Angola on Saturday evening.
Angola cruised to victory in the Round of 16 clash at Stade de la Paix with Gelson Dala scoring twice and Mabululu also on target.
Despite the convincing scoreline, things didn’t start well for Angola as goalkeeper Neblu was shown a straight red card in the 17th minute for handling the ball shot outside the penalty area, but Dala put Angola ahead seven minutes before the break.
Namibia defender Lubeni Haukongo was sent off late in the first half for a second bookable offence and two minutes later Dala doubled Angola's lead by heading home.
Mabululu's goal midway through the second half wrapped up the victory and inflicted defeat on Namibia in their first ever knockout game in the competition after finishing the group stages as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Nyambe failed to come off the bench during the 90 minutes and, after playing in two of his country’s four matches in the tournament, he will now return to Derby to re-join Paul Warne’s squad in the coming days.
Defender Nyambe has 16 caps for his country following his international debut in 2019.
The right-back has made 16 appearances for Derby since signing as a free agent in September and recently penned a new deal until the summer of 2025.
