Club History
Founded in 1886, Shrewsbury Town remain the only club from the county of Shropshire to ever play in the Football League.
Their current stadium, New Meadow, is the sixth ground they have played their home games at since formation in 1886 having previously played at Racecourse Ground, Ambler’s Field, Sutton Lane, Barracks Ground and Gay Meadow respectively.
They have won the Shropshire Senior Cup a record 67 times over the years.
Twice finalists of the EFL Trophy in 1995/96 and 2017/18 respectively, the club have never won the competition.
In historical records, the county of Shropshire is described as ‘the county of Salop’ hence the team’s nickname.
Played For Both
James Collins
Current Rams striker Collins had two short but successful stints with the Shrews between 2011-12 and then once again between 2014-16.
Across those, he made 154 appearances, only bettered by his time at Luton Town (183) and scored 48 goals.
Steve Cross
Former midfielder Cross started his professional career with the Shrews and enjoyed the best times of his career in Shropshire, making 262 appearances over a decade span.
In 1986 following his departure from Shrewsbury, he linked up with the Rams where he spent five more years under Arthur Cox as Derby rose to the top flight.
His professional career concluded with a spell at Bristol Rovers between 1991-93.
2022/23 Season
Under now former manager Steve Cotterill, Shrewsbury built on their 2021/22 finish of 18th spot with a solid 12th place finish in Sky Bet League One.
At one point, they were threatening a top six finish but form tailed off at the back end of the year and they finished the season with just one win in 10.
Following the conclusion of the campaign, Cotterill left his position as manager and was replaced by former Walsall boss Matt Taylor.
Record Against The Rams
The two sides have only faced each other competitively 16 times over the years with last season bringing the first meeting between the two in league action since 1987.
Both matches in 2022/23 ended in draws. A 0-0 draw at the New Meadow back in August and then a 2-2 draw at Pride Park Stadium in March with the Shrews fighting back from 2-0 down after half-time.
The Rams haven’t recorded a victory over their opponents since a 3-1 win in the 1995-96 League Cup.
Historically, both teams have won five matches with the other six meetings ending in ties.
