Derby County moved on to the Carabao Cup Second Round after defeating Salford City 5-3 on penalties after a 3-3 thriller at Pride Park Stadium.
The Ammies raced out to an early 2-0 lead with a header from Jordan Turnbull finding the back of the net before Josh Morris struck from range.
The Rams were able to half the deficit just ahead of half-time as Isaac Hutchinson scored his first professional goal with a first-time effort.
Festy Ebosele won a penalty midway through the second-half which Colin Kazim-Richards coolly took for his first goal of the season. However, straight down the other end, Morris also converted a penalty to put Salford back in front.
Ravel Morrison scored his first goal for the Rams on his debut with a stunning strike on the rebound after his free-kick effort struck the wall.
All five Rams stood up to the challenge on penalties, while Ryan Allsop made a save on his debut to send the Rams into the next round.
Salford took the lead after eight minutes from a set piece. Allsop made an initial save to palm a close-range header from Tom Elliott round the post.
The resulting corner was sent to the near post by Josh Morris and flicked on by Ashley Eastham to the back post to be headed in by Turnbull.
Moments later, there was a chance for the visitors to double their lead from another set piece, again from the left when the Ammies were awarded a free-kick near the by-line, this time the delivery from Morris to the back post was punched away by Allsop.
However, on the 15-minute mark, their second goal came. This time it was Morris to find the back of the net after creating some space having cut in from the right and his dipping strike found the bottom corner.
The Ammies were in attacking mode again midway through the half when Conor Mcaleny made a break down the middle of the pitch. He had the option to square to Morris, but decided to take aim on the edge of the box, forcing a good save from Allsop to palm the effort wide.
The Rams had an opportunity to pull a goal back with ten minutes left to play. Kamil Jozwiak was fouled on the edge of the box, but the loose ball popped out to Hutchinson, so the referee played advantage and the midfielder curled the effort just over the cross-bar.
Minutes later, Dylan Williams fired in a cross from the left after a Salford defender was unable to control the ball. His delivery was almost turned in by Turnbull at the near post, but it was inches wide.
Derby struck the back of the net to pull a goal back two minutes ahead of half-time. Louie Sibley poked the ball forward for Jack Stretton to run on to. The striker squared the ball to Hutchinson, who quickly turned and his first time effort was out of reach of Tom King.
In extra time ahead of half-time, Derby came so close to finding the equaliser when Sibley was played through in the area and his fierce strike was tipped onto the crossbar by King. The rebound was again found by Hutchinson, who’s effort was this time deflected wide.
Derby came out attacking in the second-half and looked much brighter in the opening stages.
Inside the first ten minutes, broke down the right side and crossed into Stretton at the near post. With his back to goal, his back-heeled attempt was equalled by King.
Just one minute later, Watson saw his shot deflected over the cross bar before Craig Forsyth’s header at the back post was claimed by King from the resulting corner.
With 20 minutes left to play, Festy Ebosele shook off his marker down the right of the area to break into the box but was quickly brought down to win a penalty.
Kazim-Richards stood up to the spot and despite slipping on the run-up, he drilled the spot kick into the left of the goal.
However, straight down the other end, the Ammies were awarded a penalty when Luke Burgess was brought down, though it was seemingly just outside the area. Morris struck the penalty down the right of the goal, just out of reach from Allsop.
With eight minutes remaining, the Rams drew level again through a stunning goal. Morrison drilled a free-kick from 25 yards out into the wall. The rebound fell straight back to him and his first-time effort fizzed through the crowded area and into the far corner.
Stretton had a chance to win the game in the final minute when he was played though by Louie Watson to go one-on-one with King, but his shot was blocked.
Graeme Shinnie made no mistake in the first penalty as he sent the keeper the wrong way to give the Rams the upper hand. Having already scored a penalty earlier in the night, Morris then drew Salford level, before Kazim-Richards also made his second of the evening.
Burgess was up next for Salford, and Allsop read him well and palmed away his shot. Jordan Brown stepped up to give the Rams the lead then Ibou Touray made it 3-2. Craig Forsyth put the pressure on by converting his penalty, but Matty Lund stood up to the challenge.
Watson was the last up for the Rams and coolly struck to send the Rams into the next round.
