Derby County winger Kamil Jozwiak saw his first-ever involvement in the UEFA European Championships with Poland come to a disappointing end at the group stage on Wednesday evening.
Poland finished bottom of Group D as a result of a 3-2 loss against Sweden in their final group match, after they lost 2-1 to Slovakia and drew 1-1 against Spain in their opening two fixtures.
Paulo Sousa’s side went into the game against Sweden knowing they had to win to stand a chance a reaching the knock-out stages, but they were unable to get the result they needed to progress.
Emil Forsberg opened the scoring for Sweden after just two minutes and he added another before the hour mark to leave Poland with a mountain to climb.
However, Robert Lewandowski got a goal back on 61 minutes and he went on to haul his country back on to level terms after 84 minutes.
Poland pushed for a winner and piled men forward during five minutes of added time, but it left them exposed at the back and Viktor Claesson made them pay to restore Sweden’s lead with just seconds left.
Jozwiak, who has 17 international caps for his country, played 61 minutes before being replaced as Sousa freshened up his attacking options.
The 23-year-old started all three of Poland’s group matches and set up striker Lewandowski’s equaliser in the draw against Spain last weekend.
Jozwiak and Poland will now focus their attentions on qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
