Derby County is saddened to learn of the passing of its former player Richie Barker at the age of 80.

Barker was one of legendary former Derby manager Brian Clough’s first signings in 1967 at the Baseball Ground.

The forward, who joined Derby from Burton Albion, made 31 appearances in the 1967/68 season and scored 12 times, including on his debut in a 1-0 home win over Huddersfield Town in October 1967.

He also netted twice in 14 games in the Division Two title-winning 1968/69 campaign, with his last outing coming in December 1968.

Barker, who scored 14 times from 45 appearances in total for Derby, went on to represent Notts County and Peterborough United prior to retiring.

He went on to forge a career in management and had spells in charge of Shrewsbury Town, Stoke City and Notts County in England, as well as Greek side Ethnikos Piraeus and Zamalek SC of Egypt.

Derby County wishes to offer its condolences to the family and friends of Richie Barker at this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Richie.
