Buxton Nets Dramatic Late Winner As Derby Do The Double Over Forest

Pictured here is cult-hero Jake Buxton celebrating his injury-time winner in Derby County’s 1-0 home win over local rivals Nottingham Forest at Pride Park Stadium in March 2012.

Buxton had come off the bench midway through the second half after skipper and inspirational defender Shaun Barker sustained a serious knee injury which ruled him out of action for several years.

Buxton had endured injury problems of his own during his time with the club, after signing from Burton Albion in 2009, but he stepped up at a key moment by rising highest to nod in Ben Davies' cross five minutes in to 10 of stoppage time.

The victory saw Derby complete their first double over their closest rivals for 40 years, following a memorable 2-1 victory at the City Ground earlier in the season despite being down to ten men for almost the entire game after goalkeeper Frank Fielding’s early dismissal.

Derby finished the 2011/12 campaign in 12th place in the Sky Bet Championship table under Nigel Clough and, from that stage, Buxton went on to be a regular in the Rams’ side and the Forest fixture proved to be a turning point in his career with the club.

Buxton, in total, made 159 appearances for the Rams and scored on 13 occasions before leaving to join Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2016.
