Derby Go Close As They Miss Out On A Place In European Cup Final
Pictured above is Derby County's Alan Hinton celebrating prematurely as Juventus goalkeeper Dino Zoff pushes his shot around the post in the European Cup Semi-Final Second Leg at the Baseball Ground in April 1973.
Brian Clough’s side, champions of the First Division in the previous season, progressed all the way to the Semi-Final stage in their first-ever involvement in European competition.
After seeing off FK Zeljeznicar Sarajevo, Benfica and Spartak Trnava in the previous rounds, they had to pit their wits against the mighty Juventus to battle it out for a place in the Final against Ajax.
Juventus were 3-1 winners in the First Leg, before a crowd of 72,000, and despite their best efforts Derby could only manage a 0-0 draw in the Second Leg at a packed-out Baseball Ground.
Hinton went close on a number of occasions and also missed a second-half penalty by firing wide, while Roger Davies was also sent off for the Rams in the second 45 minutes.
It proved to be a disappointing end to an incredible journey – and the Rams could certainly hold their heads up high.
