Max Bird Makes Senior Debut (12th September 2017)
Max Bird is pictured here as he makes his senior debut for Derby County against Barnsley in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup early in the 2017/18 season.
After climbing the ranks in the Academy Bird, who was a first-year scholar at the time, was named in Gary Rowett’s starting line-up at Oakwell.
Fellow Academy product Mason Bennett got on the scoresheet that night, after Johnny Russell’s opening goal, but Barnsley found the winner after drawing level twice.
The central midfielder played 81 minutes as the Rams fell to a 3-2 defeat in South Yorkshire and he was replaced by another debutant, Callum Guy.
It was the youngster’s only first-team appearance of the 2017/18 campaign, but the following season he returned to the senior squad making eight appearances under Frank Lampard, including his full league debut.
Bird has continued to progress since then, making 18 senior appearances so far this season, including starting 12 of the last 13 Sky Bet Championship fixtures.
